Colder weather carry..

Brian D.

Getting Dialed In
Just a few observations about carry in cold weather:

1) Coats with drawstrings can get interfere with accessing or reholstering a handgun, to the point of being dangerous.

2) I try to have no more than one layer of clothing over my gun. Winter makes that harder for me to do.

3) If you wear gloves, make sure they do not keep you from accessing and using your firearm. That limits me to something thin like cotton work gloves. If it's cold/wet enough I supplement them with disposable hand warmers in my coat pockets.

My methods work best for me, but we all have to problem solve these matters in our own way.

I'll comment on #3. Loose fitting gloves are easy to rip off. A quick tug on a finger tip will pull one off hastily to the ground.

Zippered coats are a must have for shoulder holsters.

I spent 30 or so years shooting defensive drills with a great group of friends here in Ohio, outdoors and year round. We used a scoring system that combined speed on a shot timer with accuracy of hits on IPSC/IDPA cardboard, and steel targets of various sizes.

In the winter we'd sometimes specify that you had to start with gloves on. It was your option to remove them or not, when the timer beeped to begin.

Results varied as to which choice worked best. I did better leaving them on. But not by much.

Kinda scary thinking of all the implications a simple winter glove could cause when using a firearm in a situation. Slide catching on the glove, trigger finger too fat to function correctly etc.

What is this thing you call "winter"?? <grin>

One of the good things about Texas. Most years I get by with just my lined raincoat and a pair of driving gloves.

Agreed!!! No longer do I have to deal with shoveling a driveway with a 6ft wall of white shit at the end of it. Or have my vehicles eaten through the frame after 2 winters.
