Weapons familiarization exists for exactly this moment: handing a soldier an unfamiliar rifle and letting muscle memory catch up. At Bemowo Piskie Training Area, Poland, a U.S. Army staff sergeant with 2nd Battalion, 3rd Field Artillery Regiment, part of NATO's Forward Land Forces Battle Group-Poland, fired a karabinek szturmowy wzor 96 "Beryl," Poland's standard-issue rifle since the late 1990s and a modernized descendant of the Kalashnikov pattern, built to run on the same 5.56x45mm NATO round as the M4.

That last detail matters more than it sounds. The Beryl was deliberately designed to shed the old 7.62x39mm chambering so Polish forces could feed it the same ammunition as their NATO allies, meaning the M4 carbines carried elsewhere on that same range weren't competing with the Beryl so much as sharing a supply line with it.

Elsewhere on the training area, soldiers ran their own M4s through the same drills, comparing notes on triggers, optics, and handling between the two platforms. NATO's Forward Land Forces Battle Group-Poland exists to build exactly this kind of interoperability, and a rifle swap on a Polish range is about as hands-on as it gets.
